Get Help Setting Up Your Domain or WordPress Theme
One of the challenges facing many new bloggers is that they are not particularly skilled at setting up and configuring their new domain. Sure, some bloggers elect to set up their blog at Blogspot or at WordPress.com – but I don’t think anybody seriously things that having a hosted blog is the best way to go.
Your Own Domain Name
Securing your own domain name, and hosting your blog at that domain, is generally considered to be the best approach for serious bloggers. Your blog instantly gains credibility once it is self-hosted. In addition, the flexibility you will have in developing a custom theme and controlling the content of your website will be better enhanced with your own domain.
One other concern about self hosted domains is the potential to lose control of the content of your posts. Many times in the past bloggers have been unable to retrieve the content of their posts that are hosted at third party websites. Let’s face it, writing dozens or hundreds of posts and then finding out that you have lost the ability to access them is a real downer. Having your own domain and your own self hosted blog solves that problem once and for all.
OK, You Own Your Domain Name. Now What?
Well, if you are like I was several years ago, you have no idea where to begin. Some confusing terms you may hear are:
- cPanel
- WHM
- MX Records
- cname
- FTP
You get the idea. Although many of the better web hosting companies try to make controlling your domain interactive and graphic oriented, the process of administering your site can be daunting.
Installing WordPress
My preferred blogging software platform is WordPress. It’s a great product and does a terrific job at no cost. What more can you ask for?
But if you are new to blogging and new to controlling your own domain you might get confused about how to install WordPress and how to configure it once it is installed.
Once again, you need to know about FTP, mySQL databases, etc. Who’s got time for that? As a new blog owner, what you really want to do is to start writing great articles – not spend hours or days configuring your new website.

I am so used to setting up my domains and blogs that I forget that most people have never done it before. Nice guide.
Thanks for visiting again Tom. I appreciate the comments.
For geeky guys like you and I, setting up a new domain becomes so easy we could do it in the dark. But I really feel that most bloggers don’t want to spend the time necessary to learn how to cross all the T’s and dot all the I’s.
Although I would love the business and look forward to setting up some new blogs and domains for people, I truly think that the small cost of paying someone to set up your site so is well worth the time saved for most bloggers.
Thanks for Dropping by David. I like the simple apprach to blogging and look forward to some posts in the futuire.
I happen to believe that keeping things simple with a blog, including the theme design, is the way to go. After all, we’ve heard it all before: “Content is king”.
Thanks for visiting Dave and for leaving a comment.
